What the hell have we become?
Read this book to learn about when men were men. Then pick up your cell phone, open TikTok and watch grown ass men dancing around like 13 year old girls.
I first watched the HBO miniseries when preparing for the GORUCK Normandy HTL when I had my ass kicked for 50 hours on Utah and Omaha beaches and in the towns in which the paratroopers of the 101st, including Easy Company, landed. I had not read the book until now when it was required in the GORUCK Tribe program. In reading the book I…
This one maybe shouldn’t be counted as a book but Amazon says it is and who am I to argue with the great Bezos? It’s basically a long pamphlet, or what I call a toilet read. You can knock it out in an hour. And you should. It’s just a straight up tell it how it is kick to the nuts to let you know that you’re probably not hustling as hard as you could.
There are so many self help books out and really I’m quite done with them. This is different because it’s short enough with no bullshit filler to be consumed quickly when you need a jolt of motivation.
I picked this one up at the suggestion of a social media influencer, which I rarely do. I’m glad I did. I’ll read this a few times a year when I’m feeling bla.
I’m about six book reviews behind. I better get caught up…
Troops in Afghanistan ran into a big problem. They couldn’t obtain intelligence from half the population they encountered because Afghan women are forbidden from speaking to men who are not their husband. Speaking of forbidden, at this time US women were forbidden from combat arms professions in the military.
The obvious solution was to put women on the front lines for the first time beside special forces operators, so a special unit was formed. This book is all about the real life stories of the women who joined the…
The message Seneca delivers here is both astounding and simple — Live right now. Carpe Diem. “The greatest waste of life lies in postponement,” he writes.
“You must not think a man has lived long because he has white hair and wrinkles: he has not lived long, just existed long.” Waking up, working, stressing, drinking, lusting. That’s not living. We waste so much life. Despite the title of this essay, Seneca says that life is long. We have time to do big things. We just don’t.
“When life is wasted in heedless luxury and spent on no good activity, we…
I’m a big fan of Diamandis, one of the best entrepreneurs and futurists of our time. This book is about how an individual can think bigger and launch bold initiatives. Just six years old I found the book a bit dated and I didn’t enjoy it as much as his newer book, The Future is Faster Than You Think, which I reviewed last time. Skip this one and read the latter.
I recommended a book about Wim Hof to you last year. This one is even better as it was written by Wim Hof himself. Not only is the book really good but the method itself has a ton of benefits for all individuals and especially athletes. I’ve been doing the method on and off for a couple years now and I am pretty disappointed in myself for not being consistent with it because I truly believe of it’s benefits. In the last month I have recommitted myself and I’m doing it every day. I recommend the book and the daily practice.
Descartes said “I think therefore I am.” Unamuno could be summarized with “I feel therefore I am,” although he didn’t say exactly that. I picked up this book because it was featured heavily in the first season of Star Trek: Picard. SPOILER ALERT. Don’t read further if you haven’t but want to watch it.
Data, an android who spent his life trying to become human, dies in the final episode. He didn’t have to die. He decided to die because humans die. Only then could he become human.
That’s the entire essence of this book. The tragic part of life is that we spend our entire lives fearing and working toward having no end. It’s those emotion about death that ultimately make us human.
I really enjoyed this book. If you’re entire philosophy, or Star Trek, read it.
